Game 4 requires children to understand an equation in result unknown, change unknown and start unknown formats. Make up word stories to fit each type of equation. Encourage children to make up their own word stories.
Doubles to 20 are prerequisites for the two times tables and provide key knowledge for the development of further strategies. Sequencing numbers up to 50 are also used in game 5.
When using mathematical equations it is important that it is accompanied by meaningful contexts and language that the children understand and can use themselves. Equations can very quickly become meaningless. Children will need to develop the language of doubles and halves. Children should be encouraged to verbalise their thinking as they play the games.
